A Beautiful Mind

Susan Sandler was the first client I met that said she runs her family foundation. Though she came from a wealthy, philanthropic family, she wasn’t the kind of person who squandered her time or fortune.  Susan cared deeply about inequality and made it her life’s work to fight for Black Americans and racial justice by identifying and empowering real change makers.  She had a sense of urgency and realized that she had the opportunity to make a great impact on this country’s problems - the issues of racial, economic, and social justice.  She acted as if she was just doing her work, but really she was furthering her family’s legacy: a preserved value called the “Sandler Way.”

“My parents attributed their success to a methodological approach marked by analytical rigor, extensive due diligence, and adherence to the highest standards of excellence.”

This is the Sandler way and she applied this methodology to the Sandler Phillips Center.

Sadly her life was cut too short when she was diagnosed with brain cancer and died at age 58.  Susan is the first of my core clientele to pass away, and it was hard. The saying “stars that shine twice as bright burn twice as fast” always comes to mind when it comes to her.  It was an honor to be able to be part of her journey, though due to COVID, an abundance of caution kept me from being able to care for her hair towards the end. I knew she was dying, but I didn’t know when she would pass.  So I would check for her obituary every couple months and then one day I saw it. I am grateful that her memorial took place a year later and it was an honor to be there.  It was such a release of all this emotion for me. Someone at the memorial brought up Susan’s sense of style and her hair, and I felt moved to share my experience with her.  It was a beautiful day to have a remembrance of such a beautiful mind.

This experience has taught me that I am a hairdresser that is not only there for my clients in celebration, but also for those struggling with life threatening diseases, and those who are dying.  I see it as a part of my job and I'm honored I get to be part of the caring team to help my clients feel their best at all stages of life.

Sending out much admiration to Susan and her family for their work.

Braided Maven burning man Braid Bar is Now Open!

BOOK YOUR BURNER BRAIDS ASAP

Heading out to Black Rock City this summer? Nothing is more playful than the playa, and nothing is worse for your hair than that fine particulate dust + heat + sun. So ... before you go ... do your hair a favor and braid it up! Your neighborhood San Francisco Burning Man braid bar has got you covered.

The Morphic Beauty Braid Bar books are now open for the two weeks leading up to the Burn (August 20-28) with our fabulous team of braiders who will be back in action to get your hair not only looking amazing, but also protected from the elements, so you can be fully present with your mindblowing experiences while contributing to the magic with your artful hair.

Books are open now for Tamia from August 20-28, with Brittany August 23-26 and we’ll be adding a third braider soon.

Want ideas? Check out our Burning Man Braid gallery.

WHEN SHOULD I GET MY BRAIDS?

We hear this question a lot. The truth is that the best time to get your braids is as close to your departure as possible. Headed up Sunday of Main Week? Book now for Sunday morning. Hit the road from the salon. Better yet, book for Saturday evening, hit the road that night and drive into Black Rock City at sunrise. (Spectacularly beautiful.)

FOR THOSE GETTING BRAIDS FOR BURNING MAN, WE WANTED TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER. WE WANT TO RESPECT THE NON-COMMERCIAL ASPECT OF THE EVENT, WHILE ALSO TAKING THIS CHANCE TO EDUCATE OUR CLIENTS ABOUT THE WAY THAT #BRAIDS (WHETHER DONE HERE, BY YOUR SISTER, OR ANYWHERE ELSE) ACTUALLY HELP YOU BE A BETTER CITIZEN OF BLACK ROCK CITY.

Burning Man is not only a fun party in the desert. It's a social experiment at the edge of imagination. In case you don't know, there are Ten Principles at the heart of the festival's culture. (Read them here.) It may seem like a small thing, but braids engage three of these principles -

RADICAL SELF-RELIANCE

Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources. The Black Rock Desert is a harsh and unforgiving climate for hair and skin. By braiding your hair before you go, you are taking care of yourself by giving it the healthiest and most protective style possible. It prevents breakage, locks in moisture, minimizes frizz and is overall incredibly low-maintenance.

LEAVE NO TRACE

We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them. When you brush your hair at Burning Man, little feathery strands take flight. The average person loses 100-125 of them every single day. Did you know that even those strands of hair must be cleaned up in order for the Org to get its permit next year? Save DPW a lot of hassle, and do your part by never having to brush your hair on playa.

RADICAL SELF-EXPRESSION

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. We’ve long believed that hair is more than just a part of your body. Whether you find your power in tradition, or in standing out from the crowd, hair is one of our best expressions of power and personality. Braiding your hair is an opportunity to express your Radical Self. Check out our braid gallery or our Instagram for inspiration.

So there you go! Be a good citizen, participate, engage, and help create a new culture. If you decide to do your braids here, book soon as the appointments will fill up fast. BOOK HERE.

The Return of Tee & Emi

It's Tee Time!

Tee has been making a beautiful life in Santa Cruz and we’re so happy for her. But she’s also been missing her SF and Morphic family so has decided to transition back to the city one or two days a month to reconnect. She's also excited to welcome clients to Morphic's beautiful new(ish) space in the Dogpatch neighborhood. (See address at the bottom of the email.) She’ll be offering her exceptional haircuts and color / balayage, as well as Keratin treatments.

You can book with Tee directly by texting her at 415-359-6697.

And Emi Too!

Emi is also making a return to Third Street for a few select days each month now through the beginning of the summer. Expect stunning balayage and color services (it runs in the family) as well as haircuts and all the add-on services you can dream up. Here's Emi's update:

"My entire life has changed post-becoming a mom (the girls are 2 and 3 now, see pics below!) and one of the anchoring threads that continues to completely light me up is doing hair. I'm so excited to be back behind the chair!"

You can book with Emi using our online booking system.

Annnnnnnd Annie too!

In the midst of a wave of creative output (a novel and a musical) Annie is rejoining the team to keep all the behind the scenes work moving smoothly.

We couldn't be happier to have the Morphic family re-gathering.

New Location Announcement

HI Everyone,

It’s been a year next week since the pandemic shut us down. So much has happened in that time for me, you, and the world. I want you to know that I’m holding those of you who are still struggling, and/or grieving close in my heart.

On the Morphic front, I have some big news.  I have moved again!  The new and long term home for Morphic is now in the Dogpatch neighborhood at the American Industrial Center (the northern building) at 2325 Third St. Unit 338 SF CA 94107.

I am very excited about this spot.  My original hair dream has been to have a beautiful private hair studio with enough space for my varied creative inclinations.  Where I have landed is literally the dream coming true for me.  I couldn’t imagine a more perfect space. It doesn’t just feel like a dream come true, but a miracle!

Since last year, I have been working in my husband’s wood workshop with mostly positive feedback, but there were some definite drawbacks like the power saws, the sketchy stairs, and when I left the door open there were occasions that strange people would show up and make me nervous.  But for the most part, I think we enjoyed that stint.  I am so humbled by my clients willingness to “go where I go.”  The vast majority of clients thought the wood workshop was cool even when there were 10 ft sparks flying from metal being cut with a saw (true story).  I’m sure we will be looking back with smiles, saying “Remember that time--- !”

Anyways, I have so enjoyed the look on my clients faces when they see the new space that I decided not to post photos!  I figure that you, my hardcore devoted Mishi followers, trust me and will come, and I want to see the look on your face when you see it for the first time.

With this new space, I am also shedding some old ideas about “being somebody.” Being your favorite stylist is all that matters to me. The pandemic has shown me two big things: one, that relying on Instagram and broad marketing to a wide population only works when you are passionate about it ; and two that I have attained the greatest clients in San Francisco and their recommendations to friends and family are the only growth I’m interested in.  My only goal is to remain the low-key, unpretentious, playful, word-of-mouth, creative, hair artist and stylist I’ve always been and to give all of my time to you.

Last thing I want to mention is that I need the month of March to get the place ready.  I don’t have the shampoo bowl or utility sink set up yet - and those are essential as you know. I apologize to you guys already scheduled for this week and month. I feel really bad about this. The appointments already on the books can come in for dry cuts, and we will reschedule your color for the earliest possible April dates.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Love

Mishi
